Why Oral Cancer Screening Matters
At Dailley Dental Care, Dr. Teah Nguyen performs thorough oral cancer screenings as part of your routine exam to catch early signs of disease.
Early detection can lead to simpler, more effective treatment and better outcomes.
What Happens During a Screening?
During an oral cancer screening, Dr. Nguyen visually examines and palpates the tissues inside your mouth, lips, cheeks, tongue, floor and roof of the mouth, and neck.
Extraoral (neck & face) evaluation is also done to check for lumps, asymmetry, or swelling.
The exam usually takes just five minutes and can be done during your standard dental visit.
Key Components of the Exam
- Visual inspection of mouth and throat mucosa
- Feeling (palpation) of soft tissues and lymph nodes
- Use of good lighting and mirrors for full access
- Documentation of any suspicious lesions for monitoring or referral

Risk Factors & Early Signs to Watch For
Certain habits and conditions increase oral cancer risk. Knowing them helps you stay alert.
- Tobacco (smoking, chewing) and heavy alcohol use
- Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
- Sun exposure to lips or chronic irritation
- Persistent sores, white or red patches, lumps, or unexplained bleeding
What If Something Looks Suspicious?
If Dr. Nguyen spots any suspicious lesion (ulcer, thick patch, lump), we’ll monitor and refer if needed:
- Recheck in a few weeks to see changes
- Use specialized tools or dyes to assist evaluation
- Biopsy or referral to oral medicine / head & neck specialist if needed
